Sue, an Aussie blog reader asked us for a couple of Hindi words to know while travelling in India, which could make her life a bit simpler while interacting with the local Indians.
Now, for us Indians, Hindi may be a really simple language; but ask a foreign traveler – he/she may start pulling their own hair!
Also while visiting another country, it’s always great to at least know a handful of words from the local language. The more, the merrier!
So, I thought of jotting down ten simple, easy, useful and frequently used Hindi words and phrases to know while traveling in India.

- Hello – Namaste – For eg., if you want to greet anyone in India then simply join your palms together and say ‘ Namaste’
- Yes – Haa(n) – So, here we say ‘haa’ with a slight sound of ‘n’ in the end
- No – Nahi
- What – Kya
- Where – Kaha(n)
- Why – Kyu(n)
- How – Kaise
- Stop – Ruko
- Let’s Go – Chalo
- How much – Kitna Hua (in terms of money while travelling by public transport)
