Aussie Slang

G’Day Mate!

When you move to a new country, one of the first few things that strike you is the local slang. It did get annoying for me in the beginning when the husband used local words or phrases… it annoyed me like hell, but once I got into the groove, I started enjoying every bit of it. So, here I decided to make a list of those words/phrases which can be classified as Australian Slang. So far, it is based on the stuff I have heard in and around Sydney. As and when I travel more around the country, the list is sure to expand as slang in different parts of the country may have its own variety.

This can be of help to other expats as well and if you know of any more words or phrases that can be added to the list – feel free to contact me (PA)

Here is my ever expanding list:

A

Aboriginal: Refers to the indigenous people of Australia

Aircon: Air Conditioner

B

Barby/Barbie: Barbecue

Brekkie: Breakfast

Bum: Butt

Bush: Forest type area (Aussies love Bush Walking, remember)

BYO: Bring Your Own (Alcohol)

C

Cheeky: Smart Alec-y

Couldn’t be bothered: A phrase that Aussies use when they just don’t want to do something.

Cuppa: Cup of beverage

D

Dead Horse: Tomato Sauce

E

Entree: Appetizer

F

Fair Dinkum: True. (I first heard this during the Bryan Adams concert at Sydney Opera House in October 2011, where he mentioned having heard this phrase. And the husband whispered its meaning into my ears.)

Fairy Floss: Cotton Candy

Fillet: Refers to a strip of boneless fish/meat.

G’Day: Hello!

Good onya: Good for you

Heaps: A lot

Jumper: Pullover Sweater

K

Kiwi: New Zealander

L

M

Maccas: Nickname for McDonalds

Maori: Natives of New Zealand

Mash: Mashed Potatoes

N

No worries: No problem

O

P

Power Point: Power outlet

Peckish: Hungry

Q

R

Rubbish: Garbage; Rubbish Bin: Dustbin

Roo: Kangaroo

S

Savoury: A dish that is not sweet

Sunnies: Sunglasses

T

Thongs: Flip-flops

U

Uni: University

Unit: Flat, apartment

Up oneself: Have a high opinion of oneself

Whinge: Complain in an annoying way
